Python's experimental JIT is set to be removed after its PEP was withdrawn
Radar: the experimental JIT compiler in CPython, added in version 3.13, is headed for removal after maintainers withdrew PEP 836. Factual briefing on news dated October 2026.
According to the news item, reproduced from an LWN feed and dated October 26, 2026, the experimental just-in-time (JIT) compiler in Python, added to CPython in 2024 for version 3.13, is on its way to removal. In June, the Python Steering Council suspended JIT work on the CPython main branch until an accepted Python Enhancement Proposal (PEP) addressed maintenance and compatibility concerns, set clear success metrics and provided a completion timeline.
The JIT maintainers created PEP 836, titled "JIT Go Brrr: The path to a CPython-compatible JIT compiler," to respond to the council's request. After months of discussion, they withdrew the proposal. According to the article, the project, once promising, appears to have come to an end. To consult the original, open the LWN feed indicated in the source and check the date, the PEP 836 history and the council's decisions directly in the official Python repository.
