PEP 723: dependencies declared inside Python scripts

PEP 723, from 2023, standardizes declaring dependencies inside Python scripts. Third-party tools already use it, but Python itself still offers little official support. Summary of a LWN feed item published on November 4, 2026.

According to the original text, a basic Python script is easy to copy between machines. When it depends on third-party packages, portability requires more care. In 2023, PEP 723, titled 'Inline script metadata', defined a standard for declaring those dependencies inside the script file itself.

Several third-party tools can already install and manage dependencies declared this way automatically. Even so, the text notes that Python itself has little official support for the standard.

Relevance for AI users: when you study or apply this material with a model, avoid pasting scripts that contain personal data, API keys or embedded passwords. Remove credentials before sharing code and keep the dependency block free of secrets.

To check the details, consult the original LWN article linked in the publication and the official PEP 723 documentation. Rota Nacional does not solve the packaging problem described; what it offers is personal data protection in API calls and usage records in the dashboard.
