systemd adds support for leaf components written in Rust

Christian Brauner announced Rust support for new systemd leaf components. Existing code is not being ported, and no component that others depend on will be written in Rust.

According to the source text, published on October 26, 2026 and based on a machine translation of the LWN feed, Christian Brauner announced that systemd has added support for writing leaf components in Rust. The change applies only to new leaf components. Existing code is not being ported to Rust, and nothing that other components depend on will be written in that language.

Brauner said the project would like to bring Rust support into the systemd core, but there are obstacles in Rust's support for dynamic libraries. According to him, these obstacles prevent this without greatly increasing the size of each compiled binary. The text says that, if all goes well, the work should appear in systemd version v263, expected in December. This is a forecast, not a confirmed date.

To verify, consult the original article cited in the source text, on LWN, and the official systemd project documentation, checking the date and version.
