Agent memory: preserve context without accumulating personal data

Long context can extend exposure. Separate what an agent needs to remember from the identity of people mentioned in a conversation.

The AgentLog briefing presents research on recurrent memory with multiple heads. For agent builders, it raises a practical question: keeping useful information does not have to mean retaining the entire original conversation.

Inventory your memory fields before integration. Formatting preferences, decisions and task state serve different purposes from names, phone numbers and identifiers. Define what must survive between steps and for how long; remove the rest before composing the context.

Process each input before inference. A summary produced from raw text can still contain personal data. Apply the same policy to new messages and retrieved passages; a placeholder does not authorize looking up the original identity in another system.

Evaluate task completion with the processed context. Check information loss, identifiers reappearing and isolation between users. Memory research does not prove privacy, and Rota's barrier does not determine the retention period of your application's memory.
